CNBC reports that Google plans to invest up to $40bn in Anthropic, starting with an initial $10bn at Anthropic's latest $380bn valuation and a further $30bn tied to performance milestones. The investment follows earlier Google backing of more than $3bn and comes as the major cloud providers compete to lock in frontier AI workloads.

The BBC reports that the White House will work more closely with US AI firms after an internal memo claimed foreign entities, principally based in China, are running industrial-scale campaigns to copy American AI advances. The memo from Michael Kratsios, Director of Science and Technology Policy, said the administration had new information about coordinated distillation activity.

Distillation involves using large numbers of accounts to query or jailbreak models and then use their outputs to train competing systems. OpenAI apologises for not alerting police about banned ChatGPT account

BBC News reports that Sam Altman has apologised to the community of Tumbler Ridge, Canada, after OpenAI did not alert law enforcement about a ChatGPT account belonging to the person accused of a January mass shooting. OpenAI had identified and banned the account because of problematic usage, but said at the time it did not meet the threshold for a credible or imminent plan for serious physical harm.

Altman's letter said he was deeply sorry the company did not alert police to the account, and OpenAI says it will strengthen its safety measures. The company is also facing a lawsuit from parents of a child injured in the attack, and a separate criminal probe in Florida related to ChatGPT use by a shooting suspect.

This is not a routine safety moderation story. It goes to the hard boundary between privacy, automated risk signals, human review and law enforcement escalation when AI tools detect dangerous behaviour.

Our take: Every organisation deploying AI assistants needs an escalation policy before something goes wrong. That policy should define what gets logged, what triggers human review, when legal advice is required, and when external authorities are contacted. Waiting until after a serious incident is the worst possible time to design governance.

Meta turns to tens of millions of AWS Graviton cores for agentic AI

Amazon says Meta has signed an agreement to deploy AWS Graviton processors at scale, starting with tens of millions of Graviton cores and the option to expand. The chips will support Meta's agentic AI workloads, including real-time reasoning, code generation, search and coordination across multi-step tasks.

TechCrunch notes that this is a CPU story, not a GPU story. GPUs remain central for training large models, but agentic AI creates heavy demand for inference and orchestration workloads that can be CPU-intensive. Amazon says Graviton5 has 192 cores, a cache five times larger than the previous generation, and up to 25% better performance.

For businesses, this hints at where AI infrastructure costs are going next. The expensive part will not only be training models. It will be running millions of small reasoning, retrieval and workflow steps reliably inside day-to-day operations.

Our take: Agentic AI changes the infrastructure equation. A chatbot can feel cheap at pilot scale, but a real workflow agent may call tools, search documents, write code, check outputs and coordinate with other systems every few seconds. Cost modelling needs to include orchestration, not just prompt tokens.

AI-linked tech layoffs are becoming a management pressure tactic

Anthropic and NEC will put Claude in front of 30,000 workers in Japan

Anthropic says NEC will make Claude available to about 30,000 NEC Group employees worldwide as part of a strategic partnership to build one of Japan's largest AI-native engineering organisations. NEC becomes Anthropic's first Japan-based global partner, with the two companies planning secure, industry-specific products for finance, manufacturing and local government.

NEC will also integrate Claude into its Security Operations Center services and next-generation cybersecurity services, while Claude Code and Claude Cowork will be incorporated into NEC BluStellar offerings. The internal rollout includes a Centre of Excellence and training support from Anthropic.

The announcement is another signal that enterprise AI adoption is moving from individual licences to operating model transformation. The important detail is not only the number of seats. It is the combination of internal training, customer products and sector-specific deployment.

Our take: Large AI rollouts succeed when they are tied to a capability model, not just access to a tool. NEC is treating Claude as part of engineering, consulting and cybersecurity delivery.
